Strategy to SHIP - Seth Godin

Just typed up and adopted a strategy outlined by Seth Godin in his book LINCHPIN for creating, developing, executing and SHIPPING a project.  Most great ideas are washed down the shower drain or buried on a napkin eventually discarded because most people fail to develop a plan to actually "SHIP" the project.  Read the book because this simple outline cannot do justice to his 236 pages of thought.  Even more importantly develop the system & habit of "SHIPPING" your ideas.  Many will flop but within those failures will be the great one that almost got away... DON'T BLINK!

Strategy to THRASH, OVERCOME “THE RESISTANCE” AND SHIP!

STEP ONE:  Write down the due date.  Post it on the wall.  This is the SHIP DATE, done or not.

STEP TWO:  Write down EVERY single notion, plan, idea, sketch and contact.  (Index Cards, Post-its, Moleskin, etc.)  This is when you go fishing.  Include as many people as you can.  This is the big chance.  This is where the thrashing and dreaming happen. 

STEP THREE:  Collate the cards (information) and read it aloud to the team.  Fill in the gaps.

STEP FOUR:  Create a database with the collected information.   Every card gets it’s own record.

                This is the thrashing playground.  Include words, images, sketches, links to other cards.  Rearrange.  Draw.  Sketch.   THIS IS THE LAST CHANCE TO MAKE THE PROJECT BETTER.

STEP FIVE:  Project leader (you) now takes the data and builds a complete description of the project.  It’s the blueprint of the project.  (Examples:  If it’s a book, then you’ve got a forty-page outline.  A website, then you have every single screen and feature.  A conference, then you have an agenda, a menu, a list of venues…)

STEP SIX:  Take this blueprint to the people with “sign-off” control, the people with money or your boss.  They can approve it, cancel the project or suggest a few compromises.

Then say, “If I deliver what you approved, on budget and on time, will you ship it?”

                                DO NOT PROCEED UNTIL YOU GET A “YES”. 

Once you get your yes, go away and build your project, thrash-free.  Ship on time, because that’s what a linchpin does. 

2011 @TheBOD.tv - LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Our team returned from "retreat" with a unified mission for 2011.  I now understand why many church leaders now call "retreats", "advances"... this wasn't one of those sit in the hot tub, drinking hot chocolate, play golf retreats... this was WORK... My prayer that the fruit of this escape will multiply throughout the year.

Back on point... in unanimous agreement we believe that we are being called as a staff to invest heavily in LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT in 2011.  This means identifying, equipping and releasing more leaders in our church this year than in the first three years combined.  I just shot them an email and ended it with this:

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT is our heartbeat for 2011... Invest in your leaders.  Seek God's wisdom in your decisions.  Release more people.  Don't just dream bigger of the same dream... dream new dreams.  Imagine a new reality.  Imagine things done in a fresh, never before seen way.  Create the map...  Your destiny does not lie with those willing to walk away... Believe in the divine sovereign plan of God as it unfolds before your life.  Stare fear in the face and KILL THE LIZARD!  We are the lucky few... enjoy the ride.  I love you guys.

Next January I believe we will be celebrating a mighty move of God's release of more leaders in 2011 than we could have ever imagined.  Join us... DON'T BLINK!

1. Hiring too fast and firing too slow.
2. Trying to fix the problem rather than the process.
3. Putting the projects before the people.
4. Delegating tasks instead of responsibility.
5. Assuming it’s always black and white.
6. Not following my gut.
7. Dwelling on the worst-case scenario.
8. Waiting until there’s a problem to provide feed-back.
9. Staying busy.
10. Spending too much time on the details rather than the dreams.

Leadership: Past, Present, Future

 
PAST:  Remember to celebrate where you’ve been.  It’s so easy to move ahead and fail to pause long enough to soak in the wins.  It’s a journey enjoy the ride.

PRESENT:  Be where you are.   Live in the moment.  I’ve spent way too much of my life planning to live when this or that happened…  I imagined there was a magical threshold I would cross with a big sign that read “YOU HAVE ARRIVED”.  The reality is, NOW is the best time of your life.  Live it with everything you have.  Be there, not only physically but mentally, emotionally and spiritually as well.

FUTURE:  Keep an eye on the horizon.  It’s your job.  Those traveling with you deserve it.  They are giving you the most important resource they have… TIME… and that word falls short because ultimately they are investing a chunk of their one and only LIFE in your vision.  It’s on you to study the maps, chart the course and see into the future.  Most aren’t called to see what doesn’t exist.  It’s on you.  You owe it those minding the ship to point in the right direction and make adjustments when needed or hand off the controls. 

We all lead at some level.  Maybe it’s your family, friends, department, a fortune 500 company, or … a church.   Although the stakes are higher for some, the principles are the same.   Live well and lead well.  DON’T BLINK!       

It's the people...

Group Magazine did a "Cool Church" survey, asking teenagers to rate factors that influence their commitment to church. The things most frequently rated "very important" were:

• A welcoming atmosphere where you can be yourself (73%)
• Quality relationships with other teenagers (70%)

What did teenagers rate as least important?

• A fast-paced, high-tech, entertaining ministry approach

Found this from Church Volunteer Central this morning.  Ministry is about people.  Nothing else matters if you don't get that right.  Evangelism is done through people loving others enough to invest their lives in others.  It has very little to do with cool... facilities, technology and entertainment.  Impacting churches of the future will be real and raw, focused on people not the institution.  Others will die a slow painful death.  A couple of key points "where you can be yourself" and "quality relationships".  What does that look like to you?

The Servant's Entrance

I don't even know how to begin.  So... I'll shoot it straight.  It's Biblical truth.  It's been proven throughout history.  It's tough for young men to get.  But... here it is... you don't start at the top.  It begins with with a towell not a throne.  The scripture to support the principle are too numerous to list.  It's at the very foundation of what Jesus taught.... "I came to serve not be served..."  Want to do amazing things?  Want the world to know just how much you love Jesus?  Want him to use you to change the world?  Pick up a towell and wash someone's feet... again and again and again... just about the time you think you've paid your dues... you'll just be getting started.  In the process maybe... just maybe... God will have transformed you enough to use you... to serve someone... DON'T BLINK.
